Project Kickoff Checklist: 12 Questions to Align Scope, Owners, and the First 30 Days
A kickoff meeting should do one thing: create alignment you can execute. Use this checklist to clarify scope, roles, decisions, and the first 30-day plan—then grab the free Project Charter & Kickoff Kit to run it in one clean flow.
Why kickoffs fail (even with smart teams)
- Scope is implied (everyone assumes something different).
- Owners aren’t explicit (tasks float, decisions stall).
- Risks and dependencies don’t surface early (surprises later become “fires”).
- No 30-day cadence (momentum fades after week one).
The kickoff goal
Leave the meeting with a one-page charter, a shared definition of “done,” clear roles, and a realistic 30-day plan—plus a simple follow-up rhythm.
What “good” looks like
- Everyone can explain the scope in the same sentence.
- Ownership is visible for every key workstream.
- Risks + decisions are tracked from day one.
- Next steps are scheduled and measurable.
Project Kickoff Checklist: 12 alignment questions
1) Scope + Success
- What problem are we solving and for whom?
- What’s explicitly in vs out of scope?
- What are the top 3 success measures (KPIs or acceptance criteria)?
2) Stakeholders + Decisions
- Who approves scope changes?
- What decisions must be made in the first 2 weeks?
- Who needs updates—and how often?
3) Roles + Ownership
- Who is the single accountable owner (A) for each major workstream?
- Where are responsibilities unclear or duplicated?
- What escalates to the sponsor vs stays with the team?
4) Risks + Dependencies
- What could derail us in the next 30 days?
- What teams/tools/vendors do we depend on?
- What assumptions must be validated immediately?
A simple 30-day cadence (keeps momentum)
- Day 0–2: Finalize charter + roles, log the first decisions, confirm timeline assumptions.
- Weekly: Review risks, actions, and decisions in one place (owners + due dates).
- Day 30: Reconfirm scope, KPI trajectory, and the next milestone plan.
